A pharmacy that makes your medication, not just hands it to you.

We compound prescriptions at our own lab in Iowa City, at the strength and in the form your prescriber wants.

Our pharmacist can also write the prescription himself, by video or in person. Most people have no idea that is allowed. The consultation is free.

Why a compounding pharmacy is different

The dose your prescriber wants is not always a dose somebody manufactures. The pill might only come in 10mg when you need 4. It might contain a dye you react to. It might be a tablet your kid will not swallow, or a capsule you cannot take at all.

A regular pharmacy hands you what the manufacturer made. We mix yours here instead, at your strength, in a form you can take. A cream, a lozenge, a liquid, a capsule without the filler that gives you trouble.

This is not your traditional pharmacy. In Iowa, our pharmacist can review your labs, write the prescription if one is appropriate, and oversee the lab that makes it. In most places that is three offices and three appointments.

Compounded medications are prepared for one patient at a time, from a valid prescription, and are not FDA approved. Use them as prescribed by your healthcare provider.

That is the whole idea. The pharmacist who can help you sort it out will talk to you for free.

By video, or in person in Iowa City.

Bring your bottles and our pharmacist will tell you what he would keep and what he would drop. Sometimes the answer is that you can stop buying half of it. Talk to our pharmacist

For providers

Frequently asked

What is a compounding pharmacy?

A compounding pharmacy makes medications from scratch for one patient at a time, instead of dispensing what a manufacturer already produced. We do that here, at our lab in Iowa City, when the dose, the form, or the ingredients you need are not something you can buy off a shelf. Compounded medications are prepared from a valid prescription and are not FDA approved.

Can a pharmacist really write a prescription?

Yes, in Iowa. Aaron McDonough, Pharm.D., holds the credentials that let a pharmacist write prescriptions, not only fill them. Prescribing services are available only to patients located in Iowa. A consultation does not guarantee that a prescription will be issued.

Where can you send medications?

We compound and dispense for patients in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Ohio, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Missouri, Florida, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, with a valid prescription from a licensed prescriber.

What does a consultation cost?

Nothing. It is free, by video or in person at 901 S 1st Ave in Iowa City.

Where are you located?

We have six locations in Eastern Iowa: Iowa City (two, including our compounding lab at the Wellness Apothecary), Solon, Marengo, New Hampton, and our long-term care pharmacy. Addresses and hours are below.

Do you take insurance?

For retail prescriptions, yes. Most compounded medications are cash-pay, because insurers often will not cover a preparation made for one patient. We will tell you the price before we make anything.
